Rafia Virk is a PhD candidate in Dr. Raz Shaikh's lab at the Gillings School of Global Public Health at UNC-Chapel Hill. She also serves on the executive board for ASN's Student Interest Group. Her research focuses on the anti-inflammatory role of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly DHA, in pulmonary inflammation. Rafia has published a first-author paper in the Journal of Lipid Research and a second-author paper in the Journal of Nutrition. She has also co-authored a review paper in Advances in Nutrition and a research paper in FASEB. Rafia has submitted an F31 grant that received an impact score of 24, which is likely to be funded soon. Recently, she was awarded the Ethel J. Coleman Endowed Scholarship in Nutritional Biochemistry for the 2023-24 academic year, recognizing her strong academic and research progress. Her research interests include metabolism, chronic disease, obesity, and aging, focusing on diagnosis, prevention, management, and treatment through drug/dietary research and development. She also has a passion for longevity and immunotherapy research. Rafia is seeking a fellowship, post-doctoral, or industry position upon graduating from her PhD program.
