Sam Emmerich serves as a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) Officer at the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) in Hyattsville, MD. He focuses on analyses of national obesity and trends in dietary behavior using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).
Sam graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Wildlife Ecology in 2013. He earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the University of Wisconsin in 2018. He then commissioned into the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, as part of the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). He has served on Active Duty since then, and is currently enrolled in the Veterinary Corps’ Long Term Health Education Training program.
Sam’s first duty assignment was the First Year Graduate Veterinary Externship (FYGVE) program at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. After completing this externship in 2019, he served as the Chief of Public Health for the U.S. Military Training Mission to Saudi Arabia, leading COVID-19 pandemic response efforts. In 2021, he moved to Washington, D.C. and joined the Defense Health Agency (DHA), where he was a Public Health Operations Officer and Executive Officer to the Director of Public Health.
Sam lives in Washington, D.C. with his cat. He enjoys traveling to visit friends and family and practices yoga and meditation. He loves coffee breaks, meeting new people, and catching up with old friends.
