Objectives: The purpose of this study was to find the evidence to support the hypothesis that Lipostat (compounded of Inositol, Choline, Cyanocobalamin and Pyridoxine) vitamin intramuscular injections and weight loss counseling is an effective method of weight loss.
Methods: In this study, we analyzed the weight and body mass index (BMI) of patients who visited a primary care clinic. The study population are patients who visited annually, had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, and were offered weight loss counseling. Two groups were analyzed: the untreated group, which consisted of patients who decided to lose weight on their own, and the treated group, patients who agreed to enroll in the weight loss program that provided counseling and Lipostat intramuscular injections. Lipostat injections were given every week during the weight loss program, and weight loss counseling was mandated at least once a month for patients to be eligible to continue with the Lipostat injections in the weight loss program.7-13
Results: Of 586 patients seen by primary care physicians in the clinic for annuals, 119 qualified for the study. The qualified patients were selected and separated into two categories to determine the effectiveness of the primary outcome of interests (weight loss and BMI) by comparing with patients who chose to lose weight on their own. The 18 patients that accepted the treatment had a significant (p-value < 0.05) overall weight loss of 15 pounds, while the 111 patients in “the untreated group” gained an average of 1 pound. The patients were followed for 12-15 months. The age distribution was from 41 to 79 years. Out of the total participants 62.8% were female. In the treated group 83% were female showing a significantly higher participation among female gender.
Conclusions: In this clinical data analysis from the primary care setting, the main objective was to determine whether combined Lipostat injections and weight loss counseling are an effective weight loss intervention since there was not published data on that subject. Patients in the treatment group had an average weight loss of 15 pounds and 94% of them lost weight. In the untreated group, only 32% lost weight and 34% lost weight via BMI changes. On average, the untreated group gained one pound. This data confirms the hypothesis that Lipostat injections together with weight loss counseling are an effective treatment for weight loss.
