Objectives: To evaluate the effects of KeraGLO®, a novel beauty-from-within healthy aging nutritional ingredient comprised of highly hydrolyzed and absorbable keratin, on markers of skin and hair health.
Methods: Healthy adult females (n=99, aged 35-65 years, skin phototype I-IV) were randomized in this double-blinded, three-arm, 90-day, placebo-controlled study. Participants were split into three groups, which ingested either 500mg KeraGLO®, 1000mg KeraGLO®, or a placebo, split into two daily doses for 90 days. Parameters of skin and hair health were measured at baseline and at days 45 and 90. Measurements of skin profilometry; wrinkle depth and skin smoothness were done using a 3D microtopography imaging system. Deep skin moisture was measured using a MoistureMeterEpiD, which records a dielectric constant proportional to water content of the measured tissue. Viscoelastic properties of the skin were measured using the Cutometer® method. Data on hair growth was collected via self evaluations.
Results: Wrinkle depth showed a significant decrease over baseline by day 45 in both the 500mg and 1000mg dose 5.2% and 7.4% respectively (p < 0.05). By day 90, wrinkle depth had decreased even further to 9.4% and 12.0% respectively (p < 0.05). Skin smoothness showed significant improvements over baseline by day 45 in both the 500mg and 1000mg doses, 3.4% and 4.6% respectively (p < 0.05), by day 90 this further improved to 6.4% and 7.2% respectively (p < 0.05). Skin moisture improved over baseline by day 45 in both the 500mg and 100mg doses by 8.0% and 9.2% respectively (p < 0.05), by day 90 this improvement increased to 11.1% and 12.0% respectively (p < 0.05). Skin firmness improved vs baseline at both the 500mg and 1000mg doses by day 45, 6.0% and 5.7% respectively (p < 0.05), by day 90 this further improved to 9.8% and 9.7% respectively (p < 0.05). Hair strength and health at both 500mg and 1000mg doses showed significant improvement with 95% confidence by day 90.
Conclusions: Hydrolyzed keratin supplementation using KeraGLO® significantly improved skin and hair parameters at both 500mg and 1000mg doses by both 45 and 90 days.
