Michael I McBurney is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Human Health & Nutritional Sciences (HHNS), University of Guelph, Guelph, ON, Canada; the Division of Biochemical and Molecular Nutrition, Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University, Boston, MA, USA; and a Senior Scientist at the Fatty Acid Research Institute, Sioux Falls, SD, USA. He has also held academic appointments at several universities [Texas A&M (Professor and founding Department Head of Nutrition and Food Science), Alberta, North Carolina - Chapel Hill (sabbatical), Toronto, and Michigan State] and led nutrition teams at DSM-Firmenich and Kellogg Company. Michael created DSM-Firmenich's 'TalkingNutrition’ social media presence, writing ~1,000 blog posts and managing the @DSMNutrition twitter account between 2010-15.
He is an active volunteer who has held leadership roles with the American Society for Nutrition, Institute for Food Technologists, International Food Information Council, International Life Science Institute, Council for Responsible Nutrition, Canadian Nutrition Society (CSN-SCN), and New York Academy of Science. He served as a founding Advisory Board member of the Institute of Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes within the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, founding chair of the Cornell University Division of Nutrition Sciences External Advisory Board, and a non-voting industry representative on FDA Food Advisory and FDA Risk Communication Advisory Committees. He is a volunteer member of the CNS-SCN Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group (inaugural chair, Jan–Dec, 2021) and University of Guelph, HHNS Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Michael is a Fellow of both the Canadian Nutrition Society and the American Society for Nutrition. Michael received his BS in Biology (Ecology) from Carleton University and MS and PhD degrees in Nutrition from Cornell University. Accreditations include professional mediation (Texas Mediation Training Roundtable) and Executive Leadership I, IMD Business School.
