Postdoctoral Fellow
Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute
Cleveland, Ohio, United States
Dr. Ashley Toney is a postdoctoral fellow at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute in the Department of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Sciences and a registered dietitian. She is the incoming 2023-2024 Vice Chair for the Early Career Nutrition (ECN) Interest Group for ASN, member of the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) Committee for ASN, and the postdoctoral representative for the ASN Obesity RIS.
Ashley graduated with a PhD in both Biochemical/Molecular Nutrition and Community Nutrition/Health Promotion from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She completed the Individualized Supervised Practice Pathway Program (ISPP) through Iowa State University and recently became a registered dietitian.
Her current research focuses on the oral microbiome – specifically the role of nitrate in health and disease. Her previous research examined the role of red raspberries, their associated gut microbes, and their gut derived metabolites in reducing obesity using a gnotobiotic mouse model. She also worked with community health workers to advocate for their role in research and healthcare.
As a bilingual Latina dietitian and researcher, she aims to bridge her basic science discoveries with her social/behavioral research to reduce diseases that disproportionately affect Latine/Hispanic communities.
