Dr. Sherry Tanumihardjo's research laboratory develops and implements vitamin A assessment methodology using animal and human models. They developed and support the use of the Modified Relative Dose Response test in human surveys to assess vitamin A status. This test is widely used internationally to assess and evaluate interventions. They are currently refining the 13 C-retinol isotope dilution test for vitamin A assessment that uses isotope ratio mass spectrometry for analysis. They hope to bring this test into the mainstream of vitamin A assessment methodology. They are also studying carotenoid bioavailability differences from specialty carrots and biofortified staple crops. Human studies and gerbil experiments are underway to determine bioavailability differences in vegetables. They are promoting the use of these carrots and other vegetables as functional foods.
