Dr. Juan Rivera obtained his M.S and Ph.D. degrees in International Nutrition at Cornell University. He began his carrier at Nutrition Institute of Central America and Panama (INCAP) (1985-1993), was the founding Director of the Center for Nutrition and Health at the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP) (2002-2017), served as the General Director of INSP (2017-2022) and he is currently a Senior Professor and investigator at INSP. He is a Professor at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, a Member of the National Academy of Medicine, the Mexican Academy of Sciences, and the Latin American Society for Nutrition (SLAN), where he served as President (2015-2018). He is also a Board member of the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) and of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), and a Commissioner of the EAT-LANCET Commission. He has authored over 550 publications about the epidemiology of malnutrition in all its forms and the dietary intake of the population in Mexico, the effect of micronutrient supplementation on nutrition outcomes and the design of programs and policies for the prevention of undernutrition and obesity. His research has been the scientific basis for the design of large-scale nutrition programs and policies in Mexico such as the Conditional Cash Transfer Program (OPORTUNIDADES), the taxation of sugar-sweetened beverages and unhealthy foods, food standards in Schools, and other food environment regulations. He has been part of the leadership team of the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Surveys since 1999 and has participated in the evaluation of several nutrition programs and policies in Mexico
