Keith P. West, Jr., Dr.P.H., M.P.H., is the Inaugural George G. Graham Professor of Infant and Child Nutrition in the Department of International Health in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Early in his career Dr. West served as a Registered Dietitian in the US Army Medical Specialist Corps on Okinawa, Japan and in Office of the Surgeon General at the Pentagon. Following serving as a volunteer with Concern Worldwide in Bangladesh from 1976-8, he earned his Masters’ and Doctoral Degrees in Public Health at Johns Hopkins, joining the Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye institute in 1981. His research has focused on conducting field trials and epidemiological studies to assess and prevent vitamin A and multiple micronutrient deficiencies to improve health and survival of children and mothers in across Southern Asia (Indonesia, Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh), Sub-Saharan Africa (Malawi, Zambia), and Micronesia. He is currently conducting research with the UN Relief Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Department of Health to implement and scale up antenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in Palestine refugee camps throughout the Middle East. Dr. West is also working to explore the application of plasma proteomics to assess population nutrition and health in low resource settings. His research has been reported in over 300 co-authored peer-reviewed papers. Prof. West is a Class of 2020 Fellow, and currently Vice President-Elect with the American Society for Nutrition.
