Keren Herrán is a Presidential Fellow and fourth-year PhD candidate in Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior at the University of South Carolina. In 2021, Keen earned her interdisciplinary studies BS degree titled "Global Health Considering Environmental Factors" as a Meyerhoff and France-Merrick Scholar at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Keren's research interests include health disparities, nutrition, and maternal and child health. As a Latina of Salvadorian and Puerto Rican heritage, she is fluent in Spanish and is passionate about improving the health of Latino migrants, women, and youth in the U.S and Latin America. Her project portfolio includes investigating the social determinants of adolescent pregnancy in Ecuador and analyzing the effects of COVID-19 on the daily life of Latino farmworkers in the U.S. Currently, Keen is spearheading a qualitative study on social connection and food insecurity among Nicaraguan refugees and asylees in Costa Rica. After earning her PhD, Keren aspires to both mentor students as a university public health study abroad professor and conduct social behavioral nutrition research.
