Dr. Schier (she/her) is an Assistant Professor of Nutrition at Appalachian State University. She holds a PhD from the Ohio State Interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Nutrition Program. Dr. Schier's academic journey has been marked by excellence and a commitment to advancing the field of nutrition. Having spent two years abroad, Dr. Schier contributed her nutrition and wellness expertise to the NHS England National Diabetes Prevention Program.
Her current research is characterized by an innovative approach, employing community-engaged mixed methods research to shed light on the unique nutrition-related experiences and priorities of gender-expansive youth. This groundbreaking work not only advances the field but also fosters inclusivity and equity in nutritional research.
Dr. Schier is highly engaged in the academic community, actively participating in organizations such as the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior and the American Society for Nutrition. She served as the 2021 American Society for Nutrition Science Policy Fellow, showcasing her commitment to science policy advocacy. Dr. Schier has presented at a number of international conferences and webinars as an invited speaker.
One of Dr. Schier's notable contributions to the academic discourse is a published article in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. This article outlines crucial recommendations for inclusive sex and gender data collection practices, demonstrating her dedication to fostering diversity and inclusivity in research.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Schier is a loving mother to two dogs and a cat. In her hard-earned free time, she enjoys savoring a nice glass of wine and exploring the beautiful Western North Carolina landscape.
