Suresh Mathews, Chair & Professor, Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Samford University, received his Ph.D. in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Madras, India in 1992. He completed a 6-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Division of Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. Following this, he was appointed Research Scientist and later served as Assistant Professor at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan until 2004. Dr. Mathews joined the Department of Nutrition at Auburn University in 2005 and served until 2014 as a tenured Associate Professor & Graduate Program Director. In 2015, Dr. Mathews was appointed Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics at Samford University, in Birmingham, AL, and continues to serve in this position.
Dr. Mathews' research is focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms of insulin resistance and the role of diet and physical activity in the improvement of insulin action. Dr. Mathews pioneered the research on fetuin-A as a novel hepatokine that influences insulin action and body weight. Similarly, Dr. Mathews and colleagues made novel discoveries on the role of PPARgamma in improving insulin sensitivity through its action in adipocytes and skeletal muscle cells and protection from hypertrophy in cardiomyocytes. Dr. Mathews has authored over 130 publications and has been funded by research grants from the American Diabetes Association, USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture and others. He serves as a reviewer for several leading journals and funding agencies and is an invited speaker atconferences and symposia worldwide. Dr. Mathews is committed to the academic success of students, serving as counselor and friend, and has successfully placed numerous students in Ivy League institutions, and several Carnegie I research institutions. He has served as Major Professor for 5 doctoral dissertations and 7 master’s theses. He also served on the Doctoral Dissertation Advisory committee for 7 doctoral dissertations and 6 master’s theses. Dr. Mathews was appointed an External Examiner for 8 doctoral dissertations. He has served two terms as Science Advisor and Grant Panel Manager to USDA NIFA (Program area: A1343 Food and Human Health). Dr. Mathews currently serves on the Board of the Association of Nutrition Departments and Programs (ANDP, https://andponline.org/).
