Objectives: The timing of food intake, or “meal timing”, is important for weight control and chronic disease risk. Traditional dietary assessment methods (i.e., diet diaries, 24 h recalls, or questionnaires) often capture meal timing, but there is no standard to assess it. Newly developed image-based tools offer more precision to determine meal timing. We compared meal timing assessed by three self-report methods to time stamps captured by images from a wearable camera.

Methods: Healthy, non-smoking adults (n=30, aged 23.5±4.9 y; BMI 23.1±3.1 kg/m²) used a wearable camera, the Automatic Ingestion Monitor (AIM)-2, in the research center one day and in their natural environment the next day. On the same days, they also kept a diet diary using the Automated Self-Assessment Dietary Assessment Tool (ASA24-2018) in record mode,and reported meal timing using a mobile app (aTimeLogger) and a modified meal pattern grid (Berteus Forslund et al 2002). At the research center participants ate at prearranged times, and in the natural environment at self-selected eating times.

Results: Method differences in research center meal times were not significant. However, in the natural setting, meal start times from the ASA24 record and the meal pattern grid, but not the activity log, were reported as earlier (10.3±13.9 and 6.9±12.2 min) than image time stamps (p≤0.003).

Conclusions: Self-reported methods showed longer meal durations than those captured by image time stamps in the natural setting but not the research center.
